The Reign of Terror: Okwuama Indigenes in Fear as Abductions continue in Okoloba
The residents of Okwuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria, are living in a state of panic and fear. The neighboring community of Okoloba, in Bomadi Local Government Area, has been conducting relentless attacks on Okwuama, with no intervention from the government or the police. The situation has escalated to the point where eight individuals have been abducted, causing widespread concern among the Okwuama indigenes. This blog post sheds light on the ongoing crisis and the growing desperation for a resolution.
Escalating Attacks and Dreadful Conditions:
Okoloba community has laid siege on Okwuama, resorting to a series of attacks including molestation, constant threats, and daily shootings into the community. The attackers resort to using four heavily armed power speedboats, each carrying 200 individuals armed with dangerous weapons. These gunboats aggressively monitor and intimidate the Okwuama community, heightening tension and distress among its residents.
Recent Abductions:
The crisis reached new heights on Saturday, January 27th, 2024, when traders returning from Okwagbe market were abducted in a commando-style operation by individuals from Okoloba community. This incident served as a wake-up call for the Okwuama community, highlighting the urgency of the situation. Furthermore, on Thursday, January 25th, a stranger from Okwuama was brutally attacked and beaten by Okoloba community members. It is worth noting that the victim, in this case, was fortunate to be rescued and taken to a local meeting square, as rushing him to the hospital would have posed a risk to those attempting to help.
Lack of Government and Security Intervention:
Amidst the escalating crisis, the Okwuama community laments the lack of assistance from both the state government and security agencies. The indigenes and other residents feel abandoned and voice their concerns over the lack of practical action. It is disheartening for the victims' families and community members, as the abducted individuals remain in captivity without any progress being made towards their safe release.
It would be recall that The Story reported that fresh crisis was brewing between Okoloba and Okwuama villages after Okoloba held two of Okwuama Indigenes hostage demanding for N600, 000 ransom before their release.
Peace Talks and Community Efforts:
In an attempt to find a resolution, a peace talk meeting has been scheduled between Okoloba and Okwuama communities. The traditional ruler of Akugbene kingdom in Warri has taken the initiative to facilitate these discussions. However, given the recent attacks and the perpetrators' disregard for peaceful negotiations, there is growing skepticism regarding the effectiveness of these talks.
Calls for Government Intervention:
The residents of Okwuama are pleading with the government and the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori-led administration to take immediate action and bring an end to the renewed hostility. They emphasize the urgency of the situation and the need for protection and security measures to safeguard their lives and restore peace in the region.
Conclusion:
The ongoing crisis between Okwuama and Okoloba communities has left the indigenes living in a perpetual state of fear and uncertainty. The lack of government intervention and the escalating attacks have intensified the urgency for a resolution. It is imperative for the state government and security agencies to intervene swiftly, ensuring the safety and well-being of the Okwuama community. The government must uphold its responsibility to protect its citizens and foster an environment of peace and harmony in the region.
