ACCOUNT FOR ABACHA LOOT COURT ORDER
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Federal Government to provide the details of how it spent about $5bn loot recovered from the late General Sani Abacha.
Justice James Omotosho gave the order last week while delivering judgment on a Freedom of Information suit marked, FHC/ABJ/CS/407/2020, filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project.
In accordance with the judgment, the judge mandated the government to furnish the requested information within a period of seven days.
As stated in a press release by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) on Sunday, the court directed President Bola Tinubu's administration to "reveal the precise sum of money misappropriated by Abacha from Nigeria, as well as the complete amount of the recovered Abacha loot and any agreements entered into by the governments of former presidents Obasanjo, Yar'Adua, Jonathan, and Buhari pertaining to this matter."
The judge criticized the Ministry of Finance's assertion that it lacked information regarding the expenditure of the Abacha loot.
Justice Omotosho concluded that SERAP's application had valid grounds and directed the Federal Government, specifically the Ministry of Finance, to provide SERAP with comprehensive records of the expenditure pertaining to the approximately $5 billion Abacha loot within a timeframe of seven days from the date of the judgment.
Additionally, as per SERAP's account, the court mandated the government to disclose specific details regarding the projects executed using the Abacha loot, including the locations of such projects, as well as the names of the companies and contractors involved in carrying out these projects since the restoration of democracy in 1999 up until the present time.
